I’m often asked what’s better for the skin, peels (read more here) or microneedling (see more on microneedling here) (with or without platelets) so I thought it would be more beneficial to make a list: pros and cons and benefits vs. effectiveness. I’m kinda a listy person! First, let me say they are both amazing and effective! And they work very well in combination therapy. But let’s break down what they are and what your skin care goals are (yes, it’s New Years which mean goals, or at least an early attempt at making goals).
Here’s the most simple image illustrating the layers of the skin. We’ll refer back here throughout the blog post! I mostly love this image because it’s pink, if I’m being honest!
Peels: Super amazing for fine lines, elasticity of the skin, clarity of the skin, blemishes, discoloration, and giving you bright, healthy, glowy skin! Peels range from light to deep. Light peels have very little to no downtime while deeper peels have more downtime (approximately 3 days with the deeper peels I offer). They contain brighteners and tighteners that reveal new skin and slough off that superficial damage and sun damage that lies in the epidermal layer.
Microneedling: This treatment goes into the dermal layer (dermis). Collagen and elastin live here. See how it’s the next layer of the skin? They’re important in keeping the structure of our skin in tact and firm/tight (a.k.a. anti-aging). We produce less of them as we age. Ugh. Another function that slows down! These proteins a very important and we want more of them! So in order to “stimulate collagen and elastin” (I hear people those these words around all the time and use them wrong, hence the quotation marks but I really want to insert an eye roll emoji!), the product/treatment/etc. needs to enter the dermis. Period the end! Microneedling stimulates the skins ability to repair itself. It does this by wounding the skin so that your own skin cells rush over and rebuild skin tissue. Pretty amazing, these bodies of ours! Mininal downtime (day 1: skin looks sunburned but starts recovering quickly. Day 2: tight but may have minimal flaking. The next few weeks: skin is still in repair mode. Don’t forget the majority of the action is in the dermis (see above image) so give it a hot second for it to repair and see results! Our preference is the Skin Pen. In our research, it’s the best microneedling device on the market.
Microneedling with PRP: Now let’s take this one step further. PRP. It stands for platelet rich plasma. We refer to it as liquid gold. I wanted to include a photo of what the vials look like because they are absolutely gorgeous to me. Is that weird?! This is where we draw small vials of blood and spin it around a centrifuge and separate the platelets from the blood. The platelets contain growth factors. They regenerate the skin quicker, stronger, and faster. We like this! We take the platelets and microneedle them back into the skin. It’s microneedling but the ramped up version. Downtime is similar to that of microneedling.
Pre-treating and post-treating the skin with medical grade skincare allows the skin to recover quicker. We can have this chat when you come in for your treatment! Ya’ll know I’m a Skinceuticals junkie and the Vit. C serum is legit for recovery and maintaining the integrity of the skin.
Now remember when I mentioned combination therapy?! I love these treatments in a rotation. For example, Month 1: Microneedling, Month 2: Peel, Month 3: Microneedling with PRP. They can actually be shuffled up in any sort of manner. I just like the results of a topical treatment (epidermal) mixed with a deeper treatment (dermal).
